The Art of Mastering Modems

Modem And Router Combos

It is the router and modem that lets our mobile or home computer connected to the World Wide Web, making it an integral component. The modem communicates with the ISP or Internet Service Provider. It is called as cable modem if it’s connecting to your cable provider via coaxial cable, it is a DSL modem however if it’s connected to your phone line. Your modem will also depend on the infrastructure capability of your ISP which can either be satellite or fibre.

On the other hand, the router shares this internet connection among other devices in your office or home. Say that it’s wireless and creates a WiFi network, devices in the premises can connect to it. The router can be provided with ports for the Ethernet cables. The truth is, router is connecting to the internet via modem and is recipient and owner of single IP address on the internet in which servers online can connect.

Routers also come with firewalls which are the protective barricades towards internet and offering protection in hardware format along with software firewall protection that’s available on your computer. Basically, all brands of modems and routers are working the same way except for some cosmetic differences but, there’s range of routers and modems to be chosen from and prices are varying from 30 dollars to few hundreds.

When you are in the process of selecting a modem, if your ISP is providing internet via cable network, then the modem for cable will be a standard one referred to as DOCSIS 3.0 as being the latest format across all the brands. If it’s a DSL connection on the other hand, you’d go for a VDSL connection that could deliver speeds of greater than 15mbps and ADSL connection for lesser speed.

Being able to know the number of channels available is vital. For 1 or 2 users, 4 upload and 8 download channels will suffice but for big families that have several devices working simultaneously, 16 to 32 download channels will be the ideal choice but it will cost you more obviously.

Believe it or not, it is a lot easier to choose routers as there are only 2 types of technologies used in such including AC which has beam forming technology that directs a beam to your device rather than the radius of the Wi-Fi technology and N technology which is comparatively slower. It is a smarter deal for you to buy modem and router on your own than going for what the service provider is offering in exchange for lower rent.
