All about Modems and Routers
To be able to get your home computer or mobile devices connected to the internet, you will need a modem and a router which are its two major components. With a modem you can communicate with your internet service provider. It is called a cable modem if it connected to your cable provider through a coaxial cable. If it is connected to your telephone line, then it is a DSL modem. Your modem is dependent o the ISP’s infrastructure capability. This could be through fiber or satellite.
If you have a router then you are able to share internet connection with other devices in your home or office. A wireless router creates a Wi-Fi network that devices can connect to. Sometime routers have ports for Ethernet cables. It is through the modem that the router connects devices to the internet. The recipient and owner of a single IP address on the internet which servers on the net can connect to is the router.
Routers come with firewalls, which are protective barricades against the internet. This offers protection in the hardware format in addition to the software firewall protection available in your computer.
Routers and modems are combine in one piece of equipment with ADSL devices.
With a few cosmetic differences, modem-router combos basically work the same way, whatever brand it is.
You can find many types of modem-router combos to choose from which vary in prices from those less than a hundred to a few hundred dollars.
If your internet is provided through cable network, then the modem is a standard one called DOCSIS 3.0 which is the latest format across all brands. For those with DSL connection, if your speed is great than 15 Mbps, the you would go for a VDSL connection and an ADSL connection for lesser speeds.
It is easier to choose a router. Routers use two types of technology. The fast AC which has beam forming technology, directs a beam at your device instead of the radius wifi technology. New and old devices work well on this technology. Speeds can range from 100 Mbsp to 5300 Mbps.
It is always better to buy a modem and router on your own rather than going for what your service provider is providing for a low rent. It is worth spending a few hundred dollars for a great difference in internet speed.
It is better to have one unit that serves both functions of modem and router, a combo, in other words, than getting a separate modem and router. In this modem router combo you can use different brands together, and to get the most of it you should get all the features of the best modem and the best router for your system.
